<title> Hacking, sharing passwords, and banning </title>
<author>(Sid) </author>
<category>Tempora Heroica</category>
<description>
Last weekend Sihovu logged on with Triton's character, killed him dozens of
times, and made him say nasty things to other players. Sihovu was banned
for one week for this.

The reason the punishment was not more severe is because Triton has been
known to freely give his password to anyone who asks, though for what reason
only he knows. So, in some respect Triton deserved to be hacked. Plus,
Triton had hacked one of Sihovu's characters before.

All of the players involved in this instance understand that this sort of
behavior cannot continue. I ask the rest of the players to forgive the two
of them, for now, and to let we cloud-dwellers handle any further discipline.

In other words, they have been punished. Please do not punish them anymore.
If they do anything else to deserve further punishment, we'll take care of
that up here, too.

Thanks

Sid

AP: Dungeons & Dragons Co-Creator Dies at 69

A sad day for fans of role-playing games: The man who co-created Dungeons &
Dragons is dead. Gary Gygax died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva,
Wis. His wife Gail says the 69-year-old had been suffering from health
problems for several years. Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons &
Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game
known for its oddly shaped dice eventually was turned into video games, books
and movies. It's considered the grandfather of fantasy role-playing games
and has inspired legions of adoring fans. Gygax's wife says he always
enjoyed hearing from them.

Rest well Gary. Thank you for all the games.

AP: Co-Creator of Dungeons & Dragons Dies at 61

Another sad day for rpg players -- another giant falls. Dave Arneson, one of
the co-creators of the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy game and a pioneer of
role-playing entertainment, died after a two-year battle with cancer, his
family said Thursday. He was 61.

Arneson's daughter, Malia Weinhagen of Maplewood, said her father died
peacefully Tuesday in hospice care in St. Paul.

"The biggest thing about my dad's world is he wanted people to have fun in
life," Weinhagen said. "I think we get distracted by the everyday things
you have to do in life and we forget to enjoy life and have fun. But my dad
never did," she said. "He just wanted people to have fun."
-----
Rest well Dave. Thank you for all the games.

A fortnight ago, ibiblio upgraded the server TH runs on. Titan now runs a
64-bit Linux as opposed to a 32-bit Linux which it has run on for at least
the past decade. The upshot of which was when, on Friday, I went to recompile
the mud to up the number of aliases allowed I didn't realize the kernel was
now 64-bit and well... to make a long story short... I corrupted the house
file. I've now restored it from back-up, so all should be well. However, if
you're seeing oddities. Please post a message on the board or drop me a
mudmail. I'll see what I can do to make things well.

We're still running on the old 32-bit binaries, but I'll be working on
converting the code to 64-bit in the coming months. The project is pretty
straight forward, but unfortunately a bit time consuming.

Today, the new description changes will go into effect. Everyone will have to make
a new description the first time you log in. After that you will be able to
make changes by selection number 2 (describe this character) before you log in.
If you find bugs please report them so we can get them fixed. If you have any
questions send me a mudmail.

<description>
Upon logging in the first time with the new description code in place, you
will be prompted to select at least one trait to describe your character.
Apperance traits range from hair color to ear size. Some races have 'extra'
traits. For example, trolls can choose whether or not they have horns and
what they look like. Choices will vary by race and gender.

Also, I'm not locking down descriptions once you've chosen what your character
looks like. If you're unhappy with it, return to the menu, select option '2'
and give your character a makeover.

Eventually, these new descriptions might allow for skills and spells that
will disguise your character. Right now, however, if you're affected by
the 'milky eyes' spell, your character's eyes will be milky-white. Let Min
know if you have any other ideas for descriptions changes using existing
spells and skills.

If you notice a bug with your character's description. Please email it to
Min and let her know what the problem is. We'll get it fixed. (It would also
be helpful to have a list of options you selected for your character.)

Have fun with this.
