Very busy - finals soon!

14 January 2002

(I wrote this on the fourteenth, got busy, and completely forgot to post it. It has been majorly edited in retrospect.)

Well, finals aren't that soon. They're in a month, but I have a whole bunch of them (four written, one oral, and one paper) all in the same week. The paper is twelve pages long and in German, so that's going to take a while. I have tons of research yet to do and a bit of field research (a survey for all the English speaking people I know to see how they judge the genders of made-up words). I need to start studying now for all the final because my ability to remember things in German isn't nearly as good as in English. It's improving, but it's still not anywhere close. And I have a choir concert the weekend after all the finals, so there are tons of rehearsals to take up all my (barely existent) spare time.

There are rewards at the end of all of this, though. I'm going skiing in the Black Forest for a week with computational linguistics people right after finals are over. My birthday is the day after the ski trip and almost everyone I know is somewhere other than Heidelberg. I know we'll celebrate when my friends get back from their trips and I'm sure I'll find someone here to celebrate with at least a little bit on my actual birthday. Candles, cake, maybe a little alcohol, I mean, I'm turning 21 and even though it's not an important birthday here I've got to do something...

I also haven't written about my more recent travels. I spent New Year's and the week after in England, which was lots of fun. We went to a New Year's party out in the country and then I spent three days in London and one in Cambridge. We saw Les Miserables, which was very good, and I spent two of those days in London going to museums. (National Gallery, Imperial War Museum, British Museum, and Tate Modern - I was confused about what was in Tate Modern and I realized once I got there that I should've gone to Tate Britain, but it was still cool. And to celebrate one of my friend's 21st birthday (which is actually today), we went to Hamburg this past weekend. We stayed in a youth hostel and had a good time seeing stuff in Hamburg. We went on a city tour and Rathaus tour, walked around the old part of city, went out Saturday night, went to the Fischmarkt on Sunday morning, and went on a harbor tour. Just before I left (I came back a day earlier than everyone else), I went to the Hamburger Kunsthalle and saw a neat exhibition called "Monet's Legacy" which had some of Monet's works and lots of more modern works which had to do with series. I have pictures from both trips, but I haven't picked out good ones or organized them yet. Maybe in a few days.
