Black Forest and birthday

27 February 2002

I had a great time last week in the Black Forest with computational linguistics people. We went rode up last Monday, we were hard pressed to find much real snow, but that night it snowed and then it was pretty stormy for two days. We stayed in this adorable little cabin which was right near everything. (Everything being ski slopes and about three other buildings.) I went downhill skiing one day, cross-country skiing one day, and hiked on a stormy day. I've decided that downhill skiing isn't my sport. I don't want to go so fast when I feel like I can't contol where I'm going. I think if I had a lot of time and got used to the speed, it would be okay, but I think it'll just be something I'll live without. (I think I was the same way with bikes, but after going down lots of hills, I got used to it and felt okay.) Cross-country skiing was more fun but a lot more work. And the downhill bits are even less fun because the skis aren't built for going downhill. I wasn't exhausted or even really tired, but I just couldn't go very fast. The hiking was fun, too, although the first half in snow was way better than the second half in slush. My "waterproof" boots didn't quite hold up in the slush and I had some really cold toes. We played tons of card games and board games and dice games and I think I'm gamed out for a while.

I found out that I passed at least one more class, but you can only pick up the little pieces of paper (Scheine) which are the actual proof that you took the class on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11-12, so I don't know how well I did. Yay German office hours. My grade is probably okay, but I think I'll have to wait until next Friday to find out, since I'm going to France this weekend.

My birthday was fairly quiet. A lot of people were away traveling, so I just invited a few friends over for dinner. There was a little wine involved, but no crazy partying, not that I would've chosen that for my birthday anyway. We just ate and talked and I really enjoyed it. Cakes are a little different here and I didn't have enough time to start from scratch, so I made a German-style cake, vanilla with chocolate bits (the closest I could get to my family's traditional marble cake). I was proud of myself when I found birthday candles in the grocery store and I managed to fit 21 of them into the little cake. My friends who were in Berlin called me from a street corner at midnight and all sang happy birthday, which was really sweet.
