Format shifting

I wonder if using Windows Media Player's digital filtering stuff (it digitally 'reads' the disc, as opposed to using an analogue method) means I'm illegally format shifting a CD? Quick, I should stop playing my soundtrack from Jane Campion's The Piano and stop my VCR from recording Joan of Arcadia! Oh wait, that's not on television here at the moment. (Actually, I thought using a VCR is time shifting anyway, not format shifting. Or many local law is different from the mighty USA. Dunno.)
