Should be back to posting some interesting (to me, anyway) reflections shortly, once I deal with the usual end of university year stuff, now that the final essay for the year has been handed in.
In the meantime, I've written up at tph a note on what appears to me to be the small sample size in what MSNBC call a study on dress style and ovulation.

Dove returns, and 'that' 25th anniversary

Here we go again! There was last year's appearance of the Dove Firming billboards.

Now, in the last couple of months, we've got what methinks is the second part (I'm guessing) of the so-called 'Campaign for Real Beauty' by the same outfit. After reading and hearing about standpoint theory in graduate class this week, I'm getting an idea of how someone might have thought of the campaign. Here is one typical of those being used.

I do wonder, however, what's in it for Unilever, especially in a monetary sense?

It still doesn't beat this weird one that I also saw last year, though:

I just don't get it still. I'm glad they don't have it around Wellington any more.

While we're at it, on a completely unrelated topic, AIDS won't be going away any time soon. Newsweek/MSNBC are reminding me it's the twenty-fifth anniversary. It also suggests to me that women are far more vulnerable, due to a multitude of factors. Perhaps most sobering is this quote from Melinda Gates.

For millions of married women, abstinence is unrealistic, being faithful is insufficient and the use of condoms is not under their control.

Yikes. <kbd lang="x-emoticon">:(</kbd>

Condoms and civil unions

Two related topics today...

NZH: Pope could be poised to sanction condoms.

The church is expected to give a guarded, provisional blessing to the use of condoms by married couples when one of them suffers from Aids, as a way of protecting the health of the other partner.

It is only a technical concession, based on two ancient principles, but, against the background of the stolid refusal by church authorities to countenance even the slightest deviation for more than a generation, it amounts to a revolution.

Also: Civil disunion in church and Smooth, smart, sophisticated -- it's the dapper Papa. The latter...

Conservative and reformist elements are pulling against one another in most of the Protestant churches, and also in the Catholic Church to an extent, he says.

This one goes on to express concern by an Anglican cleric that the best way for Anglican parishes to act on civil unions is to leave it to individual parishes, or there will be the risk that those on the fringes, such as the rainbow community, might feel excluded.

Each abortion bill she vetoed was irresponsible, forcing desperate women to jump through meaningless hoops simply because some do not agree with their rights to choose.

The former Archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, said condoms, when used by married couples, were a "lesser evil" than passing on the disease to more people.

"A spouse infected with Aids is obliged to protect the other partner who also has to be able to protect herself," said the respected Jesuit prelate, who remains the most influential figure among Catholic liberals in spite of having retired from his tenure at the head of Italy's largest archdiocese.

Cardinal Martini's comments, published yesterday by L'Espresso magazine during a debate with a leading Catholic surgeon, Ignazio Marino, were in stark contrast to the staunchly conservative teachings of the Catholic Church.

Assuming roles of 'surrogate men'

Elizabeth Gross, in her essay 'What is feminist theory?', makes an interesting thought about trying to make women equals with men in what she calls patriarchal theory. When they '[adopt] the role of (male) subjects of knowledge, women began to assume the role of surrogate men.' (Feminist Challenges: Social and Political Theory, 1986, page 192.)

On reflection of my first reading, I wonder if this is a good case for one creating their own knowledge. Such a statement probably has wider applicability to gender identities, too. I'm thinking this because of the difficulty many in the LGBTI community whom I know that have had difficulty making their voices heard in the dominant social system.
