MONKEYING AROUND
by Walt DavisBassist Morgan Guberman will be appearing with vocalist Aurora Josephson at Two Way Pull Records, in Chapel Hill, on Saturday June 5. The show kicks off at 8 pm and tickets should be around $5. There may be an opening band as well. The show is part of Chuck Johnson's shortwave series.
Morgan Guberman sounds like an interesting guy. He's touring here all the way from California, with bass and vocalist in tow. He's a graduate of Mills College which has a music program which focuses on modern composition and innovative styles. In addition to playing acoustic bass, Morgan also plays electronics. He also seems to have an interest in animals and zoology. One solo bass album (of the three he's released) is titled Hamadryas Baboon and he's half of a duo called "Electric Zoology" (with a self-titled release) who record music for independent documentaries about underwater and insect life.
I've heard two of the bass cd's -- Hamadryas Baboon and the new Torpor. The music draws primarily from a 20th century classical and new music rather than jazz, with the music ranging from quiet delicacy to pulsating energy. But make no mistake, this is a musician who's finding his own path through the thickets of composition vs. improvisation, of classical vs. jazz vs. whatever. The music cames at you in waves, sheets even; creates tension through furious repetition one moment, through the ringing of a single plucked note the next; sometimes joined by Guberman's guttural vocalizations or pushed to startling heights by Aurora Josephson's clear and powerful wordless vocals.
To be honest, I expect to see the Two Way Pull "shoebox" blown to bits when Guberman hits his depths and Josephson reaches her heights -- and I think we should all be there to help with the clean up.
