Italian Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill
Each year the Italian section invites speakers from the United States and Italy to give lectures in the department. These lectures are often open to the public, and in the past have attracted students and faculty from different disciplines. The events have been co-sponsored by the Center for European Studies and the University Center for International Studies.

Each semester the Italian section organizes a film festival that consists of weekly screenings of Italian films. Don’t worry, there are subtitles! The films range in period and genre, from the neorealist masterpieces and the artistic films of the famous Federico Fellini, to celebrated comedies of the 1980s and 1990s, and more recent romantic comedies, dramas, and suspense films. The films are shown on campus in the early evening.

The tavola italiana (Italian table) is a conversation hour, in which students, teaching assitants, and others meet to speak Italian. Students at all levels are welcome. Advanced students or those returning from Italy may find the tavola an excellent opportunity to maintain fluency; however, beginners should not be intimidated! This is a great chance to learn new phrases and to listen to the language in a natural context. The tavola is currently facilitated by a visiting scholar from Florence, who organizes the meetings around cultural topics, such as food, music, fashion, and travel.

Organized by graduate students, this department-wide conference attracts panelists from Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese, from all over the country and abroad. In recent years, increasingly more faculty, in addition to graduate students, have joined panels, and the conference has gained a national reputation for being the largest of its kind.

Since 1999, the Italian Club at UNC-Chapel Hill has organized Italian film screenings, guest lectures, pizza parties, and other educational and social events. It is open to any undergraduate or graduate student with an interest in Italian culture, and its members are always open to ideas for new activities. If you are interested in joining, please subscribe to the listserv ("italianclub" at http://www.listserv@unc.edu) so that you may receive announcements of upcoming events. For specific questions about the club, please contact Francesca Messmer or Antonio Lubrano-Lavadera, the current co-presidents.
