Position Available, Savannah, GA



The Georgia Historical Society headquartered in Savannah is seeking a
service-oriented professional to fill the position of Manuscripts
Archivist. Position description follows:

Title:                  Manuscripts Archivist
Reports to:             Director of Library and Archives
Supervises:             Interns and Volunteers                  	

Primary Duties: 
?     Responsible for arranging, describing, preserving, cataloging, and making
available all manuscripts, broadsides, sheet music, and other paper-based
material excluding visual materials within the collection of the Georgia
Historical Society. 

?     Works with the Reference Archivist, Visual Materials Archivist, and under
the supervision of the Director of Library and Archives in the development
of the collection, implementation of an online public access catalog, and
authority control.

?     Serves as the Archivist for the Savannah Jewish Archives at the Georgia
Historical Society. (25% of job time, has seperate job description)

?     Participates in planning and works with the entire Georgia Historical
Society staff to ensure total integration of library/archives component
into the mission and goals of the Society.

?     On request, provides reference service requiring advanced knowledge of
the manuscript collection.

?     Supervises student interns and volunteers.

?     Provides assistance and advice to individuals and organizations
throughout Georgia seeking information/advice on caring for archival
materials.

?     Other duties as assigned
        	
Qualifications:
Education: ALA accredited Masters of Library Science, Masters in History,
or Masters in Public History with Archival Education.

Required: Minimum of two years professional experience in library/archival
repository; demonstrated knowledge of archival principles; previous
processing experience; advanced knowledge of automated systems and
standards; supervisory experience. Must have excellent written and verbal
communication skills.
                                                                	
Preferred: Familiarity with rare books, maps, and the MARC format.
