     Job Opportunity - Archivist - National Park Service

     Full-time Archivist (GS-11) - The Frederick Law Olmsted National
     Historic Site in Brookline, Massachusetts is seeking a candidate with
     experience and knowledge in project management and design, development
     and implementation of Internet searchable databases.  The position
     offers a unique opportunity to work with one of the most widely
     researched collections in the National Park Service.

     Reporting to the Supervisory Archivist, the Archivist will coordinate
     and implement a multi-year project to develop and design the Olmsted
     Research Guide Online, an Internet searchable database of the design
     records of Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. and his successor firms. This
     position interacts with the grantor organization, technical vendors,
     and the partner organizations.   Primary duties include: working with
     partner organizations (primarily the National Association for Olmsted
     Parks) and technical vendor to develop and design the collections
     management database (Foxpro) and Web search engines; assisting
     partners with hiring, training, and supporting data entry personnel
     and student assistants; in conjunction with partner organization,
     setting priorities, planning, and directing workflow of student
     assistants engaged in grant related work; ensuring quality, accuracy,
     and timeliness of data entry performed at the Frederick Law Olmsted
     National Historic Site and at other repositories; overall grant
     administration including semiannual reporting to grantors, tracking of
     consultant and student assistant time and expenditures; oversight of
     cooperative agreements with partner organizations.  The Archivist may
     also be asked to assist with other technical projects relating to:
     database management; the World Wide Web; and digitization.

     Secondary duties may include: evaluation of archival and manuscript
     collections; arrangement and description of collections; accessioning
     of appropriate collections into park collections; deaccessioning of
     inappropriate collections;  setting up work and reference services
     areas; production of finding aids and a repository level guide;
     entering collections information into the NPS automated collections
     management system; research and determine copyright;  making
     recommendations and developing automation systems and linkages that
     will expedite research and information communication.


     The position will be open from January 25, 2000 - February 8, 2000.
