New Carpeting and Offgassing

I am new to the library/archives field, 7 months new and I work
at Old Sturbridge Village Research Library. I have convinced the
Village to invest in new carpeting for our Reading Room area.
Which I am very excited about, as this carpeting has been down
since the early 70's. (Does Harvest Gold mean anything to you?)

My question is in relation to offgassing of new carpets in
enclosed environments. I am trying to convince the maintenance
crew to wait until spring to allow the carpet to offgas elsewhere in
the village and then be installed.

Does any institution have information/advice/resources on this
type of offgassing? What are the effects of this type of
offgassing in an enclosed environment have on people, books,
etc...

Though you could reply off list, I find this information is useful to
all. As I did try to research the lists archives and did not come up
with a complete answer to my question.

Thanks for your help in this matter.
