Unfortunately the point of the story is that the
material isn't permanently deposited with an archives. Unless there is an
air-tight agreement between the depositor and the institution that fully
delineates responsibilities, permission requirements, etc. there is nothing that
can prevent a descendant from descending upon the institution and demanding the
material back.
The
ideal is to make the permanent deposit a permanent donation. How can that be
accomplished. Well in the donation agreement there might be a clause that
stipulates that if in the future a descendant(s) requests/demands the return of
the materials then the descendant(s) will reimburse the conservation costs
incurred by the institution. Remember there is always a carrot and a stick
someplace.
