Forum on Information Policy/Knowledge Management

PUTTING DIGITAL INFORMATION TO WORK:
KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND INFORMATION POLICY

University of Maryland forum will explore policy issues associated with
use of digital information, April 10 - 11, 2000

The rapid shift to digital information presents unprecedented
opportunities and challenges for businesses and other institutions. The
implications of this shift, and how to capitalize on and deal with them,
are the subjects of the first annual Maryland Forum on Information Policy
Issues, April 10-11, at the University of Maryland in College Park. The
Forum is organized by the College of Library and Information Services
(CLIS).

Dr. Thomas Davenport, Director, Andersen Consulting Institute for
Strategic Change and Professor at the Boston University Graduate School of
Management, is speaking on "Knowledge Management and the Future Course of
American Business." Davenport, an internationally known expert in the
field and author of Information Ecology and Working Knowledge, among other
books, will analyze the Knowledge Management phenomenon, assess its impact
on business, and offer insights on its continuing impact in the years
ahead. His presentation is scheduled for April 10, 1 - 2:30 PM, Colony
Ballroom, Stamp Student Center Building.

Other speakers at the Forum include:

Dr. John C. Thomas, Manager of Knowledge Socialization at IBM's
T.J. Watson Research Center, speaking on "Knowledge Management and Human
Socialization: Information Serving People," April 11, 1 - 2:30 PM, Special
Events Room, McKeldin Library.

Mr. Ian Wilson, National Archivist of Canada, speaking on "Archives,
Records, and Information Policy: Issues and Challenges for the
Future," April 11, 4 - 5 PM, Special Events Room, McKeldin Library.

There is no charge for these lectures and anyone who is interested is
invited to attend, but it is requested that people notify us so we can
plan for enough space. Please e-mail the conference organizer, Dr. Bruce
Dearstyne, at bd58@umail.umd.edu, or call CLIS at 301-405-2038.
