TITLE: Librarian (Librarian I), Assistant Curator for
Historical Manuscripts
LOCATION: Archives & Manuscripts Department, McKeldin
Library
CATEGORY: Exempt Staff, Full-Time, Contract Appointment
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
RESPONSIBILITIES: Curatorial responsibility for the
Libraries' archival and manuscript holdings relating to the
history of the Maryland region; labor union archives;
women's history collections; journalism; and also for other
historical collections such as the European Heritage
Documents Collection and the Cuba Company archives
(hereinafter collectively referred to as "historical
manuscripts collections"). Processes historical
manuscripts collections, including editing finding aids and
preparing descriptive cataloging data for OCLC records. Has
responsibility for the content presented about UM
Libraries' historical manuscripts on the Libraries' Web
site, on Archives USA, and other electronic venues.
Provides reference service for historical manuscripts
collections; periodically serves as Maryland Room desk
librarian; assists in day-to-day coverage of the Archives &
Manuscripts Department during open hours. Acts as the
departmental liaison with the Preservation Department for
conservation treatment of historical manuscript
collections. Assists the curator of the department in
collection development, fund raising, public programs, and
other outreach projects pertaining to historical
manuscripts. Participates with other curatorial staff in
planning within the department. Supervises student
assistants, interns, support staff, and volunteers.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA-accredited Master's degree
in library science, or advanced degree in American history,
American studies, or other related discipline. Preferred:
ALA-accredited Master's degree in library science with an
emphasis on formal archival education and training. At
least one year of prior work experience at the professional
level in an archival repository with experience in
processing large archival collections of organizations and
institutions. Public service skills, including work
experience at a reference desk in an archives or special
collections setting. Prior experience supervising student
assistants, volunteers, and support staff. Demonstrated
familiarity with personal computers and the Internet.
Excellent oral and written communication and research
skills. Ability to organize multiple tasks and to work
with numerous individuals within and outside the Libraries.
BENEFITS: 22 days annual leave and 3 personal days; 14
paid holidays; 15 days sick leave.
