Applications are sought for the position of Summer Graduate Student Practicum in the Special Collections Department of University Libraries at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

Position Description: Summer 2000 practicum for a Library or History graduate student planning a career in an academic library or archives, to work with manuscript materials. The goal of the practicum is to provide the student with experience in arrangement and description, HTML mark up of finding aids, and preservation techniques. Students will have access to a high level of technology that is one of the VT library's hallmarks and will work with experienced staff. There will be easy access to Internet workstations with copious software and opportunities for Web design, if desired. There may be also be opportunities for learning and applying the EAD (encoded archival description) and Dublin Core metadata. The practicum may begin as early as May 23, 2000 and end as late as August 25, 2000.

Qualifications: Experience and course-work focusing on archives are required, as are effective interpersonal, oral, and writing skills. Highly Desirable: Completion of (2) archives courses (including processing), familiarity with HTML and EAD. Candidates must be able to climb ladders and lift 40 pound boxes. Recent graduates may also apply, however successful candidates must commit to completing the practicum term.

Compensation/Salary: Full-time temporary position; up to ten weeks at $10-12/hr,
total not to exceed $4800. Some flexibility is possible. No health or retirement benefits. Please note: there is no relocation allowance available for students at this time, nor is the cost of housing included.

It is the home of the Digital Library and Archives which includes electronic journals and ETD (Electronic Theses and Dissertations). Virginia Tech is the land grant university for the Commonwealth of Virginia with approximately 23,000 undergraduates and 3,300 graduate students. The university is located in Blacksburg, at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains accessible to several major metropolitan areas.
