With its ranking as one of the top ten research institutions in the
country, the University of California, San
Diego possesses the academic benefits of a world-class research
university. Overlooking the bluffs of La Jolla, UCSD has an enrollment of
approximately 18,600 and employs 5,000 faculty and other academicians, and

programs; one of sixty-two members of the Association of American
Universities, it ranks third among American universities in research and
development spending and first among University of California campuses in
receipt of federal contracts and grants to support research. In 1999, US News
& World Report’s annual survey ranked UCSD seventh nationally among public
universities. UCSD is poised for major growth in the next ten years, with
planned enrollment of 27,600 by 2010.
