The University and the Libraries

With its ranking as one of the top ten research institutions in the country, the University of California, San Diego possesses the academic benefits of a world-class research university. Overlooking the bluffs of La Jolla, UCSD has an enrollment of approximately 18,600 and employs 5,000 faculty and other academicians, and over 12,800 non-academic staff. UCSD has developed distinguished academic programs; one of sixty-two members of the Association of American Universities, it ranks third among American universities in research and development spending and first among University of California campuses in receipt of federal contracts and grants to support research. In 1999, US News & World Report’s annual survey ranked UCSD seventh nationally among public universities. UCSD is poised for major growth in the next ten years, with planned enrollment of 27,600 by 2010.

The UCSD Libraries, a member of the Association of Research Libraries, consists of the Art & Architecture Library, Biomedical and Medical Center Libraries, Center for Magnetic Recording Research Library, Film and Video Library, International Relations and Pacific Studies Library, Mandeville Special Collections Library, Music Library, Science & Engineering Library, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Library, Social Sciences and Humanities Library. The combined collections total over 2.5 million volumes.

The UCSD Libraries are fully automated and make active use of innovative technologies. Remote access to collections and services is provided through the local INNOPAC system, and Infopath, the campus-wide information system. Through participation in the California Digital Library, UCSD Libraries and patrons have access to numerous research databases and full-text electronic resources, as well as patron-initiated services and other innovations in interface design and functionality. The UCSD Libraries are committed to sharing responsibility and authority for planning and problem solving throughout the organization.

Mandeville Special Collections Library

The Mandeville Special Collections Library is a non-circulating collection of 250,000 books and 18 million manuscripts. Major strengths of the collection include pre-1850 voyages of exploration & discovery to the Pacific; the Spanish Civil War; experimental American poetry; the history & culture of California & the American Southwest; Baja California; Melanesian anthropology; artists' books; and the history of twentieth-century science. MSCL also houses the UCSD Archives. The MSCL conducts a vigorous instructional program serving the UCSD community and participates actively in programs for the larger scholarly and San Diego communities. In addition to providing specialized resources in the traditional ways, the MSCL has created a program of electronic publications, e.g. finding aids for manuscript/archival holdings, exhibitions, and digital content; the MSCL actively applies new technologies to improve patron access. Because the MSCL collections have been developed in concert with UCSD's academic strengths, UCSD faculty and students use MSCL extensively. MSCL has a permanent staff of 11 (3 librarians, 8 paraprofessionals), a lively exhibition program, and an active collection development program.
