Re: preserving paper material

Morning, Bobby:

I'm afraid that there are no magical ways to solve the problem of fading
ink. Do not laminate or encase them in lucite- this will not help at all
and will actually do a great deal of damage in the future. There are no
special coatings that will help.

The best you can do is store them in a cool, dark environment. This means,
obviously, that you should not put them on display, except perhaps for very
special occasions. Low temperatures can dramatically reduce the rate of
deterioration, and keeping things in the dark prevents the many changes
caused by exposure to light. Because tickets and programs were never
intended to last longer than the day of the event, they have many of the
same problems as newsprint.

If you have enough materials to warrent, you should consider "acid-free"
document boxes and file folders as well as other archival supplies
available from such vendors as Light Impressions, University Products or
Conservation Resources International. All are on the web. If you have
additional questions, please feel free to contact me.

our athletic department and I will be the curator. We have some old paper
memorabilia that I would like to preserve such as programs and tickets. I
have heard various means as to how I should do this ranging from:
laminating to encasing in lucite. I want to preserve the ink and print on
the tickets. I've seen some tickets that lose their ink and print after a
few years as it fades off. I want to prevent this by coating them with
something. Any suggestions? I have e-mailed about a half dozen of you
today from e-mail addresses I gathered beginning with the National
Archives. If you can assist me I would greatly appreciate, if not , maybe
you could point me in the right direction. Thank You, Bobby Sizemore
