RAIN 3/23: Packets, dosimetry, 1890 and Sing Sing (and more)
Yesterday March 22nd was a busy day in the news. Lots of interesting items.
(Remember some of the urls are long and you may have to do some cut and
paste)
"Live Free or Die" with a motto like that you can imagine that access to
government records in New Hampshire is important.
Foster's Daily Democrat (Dover, NH) 3/21/00
Information packets should be limited to town officials, says Durham

The proposed ISO 15489 records management standard says that a record should
have the following characteristics "authenticity, reliability, integrity,
useability, accuracy, adequacy and completeness." With that locked firmly in
your mind the following story about record tampering will be of interest.
(Be aware this is one long url)

The proposed standard also provides guidance on access and retrieval.
"Organizations should have formal guidelines regulating who is permitted
access to records and in what circumstances. Records may contain personal,
commercial or operationally sensitive information." With that in mind the
following stories all deal with this sensitivity of recorded information.

Probably the biggest headache in the records and information management
field is electronic records. Folks it's not going to get any easier even
thought there are people trying to make it easier. And of course someone is
always proclaiming the advent of the paperless office (haven't I heard that
before or is there an echo running about)

(may or may not be working, keep trying)
But then again in some places paper records still rule and the manner in
which is presented is important. I think that the legal records managers
will find the following item of extreme interest and the archival crowd will
have a guideline for what constitutes "original order" (respet d'fonds) in
a record.

Stories about records revealed.
You gotta love England's Public Records Act. Why? Well every so often a
story appears in the press about some records which can now be read by the
great unwashed. These records usually have a 30, 40 or 50 year seal on them.

The Sing Sing in this posting's subject line does not refer to Benny
Goodman's great jazz tune (love the Carnegie Hall version), but rather to
the prison located in upstate New York that housed the death chamber.

Finally (we're almost there) reconstruction is not a term lightly used in
parts of America. However many genealogists (and archivists) will be
interested in the following reconstruction story.

But then Seattle or rather King County decides that transportation is more
important and breaks up a collection. Hope they don't have to reconstruct
it.
