DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

This archivist II position is the curator of the Outer Banks History Center
(OBHC) located in Manteo. The Outer Banks History Center is a component of
the Archives and Records Section and specializes in collecting and
preserving library and archival materials pertinent to the history and
culture of the Outer Banks region of North Carolina. The OBHC preserves and
makes available for research extensive holdings of manuscripts, books,
periodicals, photographs, maps, audio and video recordings, paintings, and
ephemera. This position is the administrator of the facility and program,
and is the chief curator for the center's collections reporting directly to
the state archivist and records administrator and the assistant state
archivist. The curator supervises two professional positions and one office
assistant position and is responsible for the overall operation of the
OBHC. This responsibility includes the care and preservation of materials
in the center's collections; arrangement and description of holdings;
acquisition and accessioning of new materials received by gift, loan, or
purchase; overseeing the center's budget; preparation and management of
grants; production of audio and video oral histories; providing reference
and research services; handling public outreach; coordinating with OBHC
support groups, and preparation of reports. Saturday work on a rotational
basis is required to provide reference service for the public.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

The curator must be well-versed in both the techniques and requirements for
the curation of archival and library materials; must be familiar with North
Carolina history (preferably with specialized knowledge of coastal
history); must possess supervisory skills and the ability to work in
unstructured situations; have a working knowledge of reference sources for
historical materials and the ability to utilize such materials; ability to
conduct in-depth research using primary and secondary source materials;
ability to apply advanced archival techniques in the appraisal,
arrangement, and description of historical records and documents; ability
to function independently on assigned projects to high standards; capacity
to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other
employees and the general public; and must have grounding in computers and
computer techniques.

REQUIREMENTS ---MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from a four-year college or university preferably with a major
in history, library science, or a related social science and two years of
progressive experience in archives and records work, or an equivalent
combination of education and experience.

PREFERENCES --- EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

Prefer candidates with graduate training in archival management, history,
or public administration as well as substantive appraisal, arrangement,
description, and reference experience. Certification by the Academy of
Certified Archivists (CA) also is desirable.
