Good position hunting requires a variety of strategies and tactics. My answer
will be more than what you asked for.

1. Check the websites/newsletters of Professional Organizations such as SAA,
ARMA, SSA, MARAC, or whatever country you live (so as not to be US-centric)

2. Network with your colleagues. They may know of a position. Let them know
that you are looking. supply them with your resume.

3. Read the newspapers/research on the web. Why? many times jobs are not
advertised but rather are created by an aggressive individual who has created
the position.

4. Prepare a short two-minute monologue which you can give at the drop of the
hat to any one who asks who you are and what you do. (commonly known as the
elevator speech ie you suddenly find yourself in the elevator with the CEO of
the company and he asks who you are and what you do. 2 minutes!)

5. Learn the language of business. what are the buzz words. What is on the
radar. Learn how to tell and sell yourself. Speak to business' concerns not
yours. Don't talk about off-gassing or acid-free, but rather how you can add
to the bottom line, how you can improve efficiencies in the organization.

6. Learn how other corporations established their archives and why. Talk to
the current archivist in charge. Network

7. Read the Wall Street Journal ($5.95 per month on line and well worth it,
cheaper than a daily hardcopy .75 cents per day) Read Business Week, Forbes,
etc.

8. Cold Call. Make sure your resume is registered with online headhunting
firms such as Monster.com, etc. I once saw an archivist position with Arthur
Andersen in Germany advertised on line.

I will relook at this in the morning and add more. Job hunting is not easy
and the ideal position will not fall into your lap. Prepare your life
strategy. What do you want to be when you grow up <g> and how will you
achieve it.

Hopefully this will help some
