It might well be a legend, however, it does pay to be careful. Male or
female.
Whether we like it or not there are alot of crazy people in this world.
DON'T BE

It might be "unprofessional" to pass things like this around, but if
one person is made to think about her safety and doesn't end up in
peril, then I'll be unprofessional all day long.

I agree. It isn't any more "unprofessional" than a week-long discussion of
hush puppies. And it's much more relevant!

The concern for personal safety is well accepted and the need to be aware of
one's surroundings is also important.
However it is my understanding that we are information management
professionals. Is it not part of our professional responsibility to insure
that our patrons and clients receive accurate information? I have no problem
with someone passing on an ACCURATE and TRUE story that will raise someone's
consciousness. However the passing on inaccurate information is wrong and
unprofessional. All I ask is that before passing on such stories one check
out the veracity of the story. If it is then true pass it on, if it is not
true than at least put URBAN LEGEND in the subject line, just as we use
"Friday Funny" or "Off-Topic" to warn people what is coming.
The 'hush puppy' discussion was just plain silly and as a participant I
don't regret it as it had been a hard day and a hard week.
