Re: maritime query

Since you know the patent year you might want to contact the U. S. Patent Office for any information submitted for the patent.
The Smithsonian Institution has a sizeable collection of maritime artifacts. The National Museum of American History--Science, Technology, and Culture at the Smithsonian Institution has navigation instruments. A few years ago the Curator of Maritime History was Paul F. Johnston. Robert Grahm at the Institute for Great Lakes Research at Bowling Green State Unviersity in Bowling Green, Ohio might be of some assistance. The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA has an outstanding collection of all sorts of navigation instruments. Mariner's Museum in Newport News, VA also has navigation instruments as does Mystic Seaport Museum, Inc., in Mystic, CT. There is also a museum of the Great Lakes in Detroit. I believe it is called the Dossin Museum.
Hope some of this will be helpful.
