Re: Cleaning photographs

I've never tried it, but Metal Edge Inc. has a product called PEC-12 Photo, Negative & Slide Cleaner (p. 49 of most recent catalog). It says it removes dirt, fingerprints, pen and permanent marker.

Beth:

It might be a bit pricey, but I suggest that your colleague look into
getting digital copies of the images. In that process, she/he can have the
flaws removed without harming the photo emulsion further. besides, the
writing on the image may be important to future family or historians,
however unsightly it might be (that's assuming it's informational writing).
Most conventional removal processes will only harm the photos.

My own grandmother had a "bad" habit of writing on the face of family photos
(even cartes d'visite!) rather than on the verso, but at least she
remembered to put some helpful descriptive info down for future generations.

A good scanner tech can easily "erase" image flaws. The
electronically
cleaned image(s) can (and should) be rephotographed on convential
black
and white copy film so that long-term, archivally stable negative
images
        are achieved.

        Best of luck!
