Re: Sanborn maps

Dear Mr. Logan:

Your question has been referred to the Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division for a reply. A "D" or somtimes "Dwg" on a building on a Sanborn map usually denoted a dwelling as opposed to a "S" for a shop.

Sincerely,

Kathryn L. Engstrom
Reference Team Leader
Geography and Map Division

Does anyone on the list familiar with the Sanborn maps know what the "D" on
many of the depicted structures stands for? A patron asked and I cannot find
a mention of its purpose on the map key. You can reply off-list.

Thanks
