Re: Record Group numbers in MARC format

If your record group numbers basically function as your shelflist/location
numbers, use the 099 field--the local free-text call number. The 099 stores
on OCLC as a local field, so you never have a chance to see them in OCLC
records. If you want to see what 099 fields look like in use, go to the IHS
website (www.indianahistory.org) and either get into the OPAC directly or
into the manuscripts collection guides, then into the OPAC. BF&S will give
you plenty of information on the 099. If you have any questions feel free
to get back to me.

Subject: Record Group numbers in MARC format

Here at OSU, we will soon be downloading records for our university archives
into our local catalog. Some of those records represent collections of
materials with record group numbers. Where are such numbers customarily
recorded in the MARC record? I am an experienced cataloger, but not very
familiar with archival cataloging practice. I haven't found anything in
"Archives, personal papers, and manuscripts" that specifically addresses
this question.

Thanks for whatever information you can provide.
