Re: Accessing digitized microfilm

I'm posting this on behalf of a colleague:

Access to images of text pages through a finding aid is possible through a
bundled approach, but also Cal Lee's posts of Michigan's TIFF to GIF
conversion http://www.dlib.org/dlib/may97/michigan/05pricewilkin.html and
LC page turning http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/award/docs/page-turning.html
are relevant.

We did a project for the Naval War College where the finding aid was used as
the link to individual folders in the manuscript collection. The microfilm
was scanned and TIFF files created. Each folder was converted to a PDF file,
note some of these PDFs are rather large in filesize. PDF in this case was
the access image and Tiffs are stored.

The site is http://www.nwc.navy.mil/library/4Resources/bates-papers.htm
Some explanations and other film to digital projects are shown on

Subject: Accessing digitized microfilm

Has anyone out there digitized microfilm and made it accessible/linked to a
finding aid (either EAD or HTML)? I'm pondering how to effectively provide
some kind of access to the .tif files resulting from digitizing the
microfilm frames, without having to close and open each file, but rather
scroll through (on a server, not CD). The collection is large and filmed on
167 reels of film.

Has anyone played around with this? Did you convert to .pdf first? Are
there any web sites with access to entire digitized microfilmed collections?
Any suggestions?

Thanks.
