Re: Estimating cost of HVAC

An item very popular with our buildings people on base is R.S. Means
"Building Construction Cost Data". Means is a bible for construction
planning, etc. In the Means "Assemblies Cost Data" volume, air conditioning
and heating are addressed. I'm looking at a supplement, cannibalized from
that volume, which is now part of the first volume I mention. All that
babble aside, with exceprts from the latter volume, I see quite a detailed
cost analysis for fin tube radiation heating (residential). I also see
rooftop multizone AC, self-contained, H2O-cooled AC. For both of the AC's,
info is given for various types of buildings, and libraries and banks are
lumped together. I see figures for cost per square foot for materials, for
installation, then a total. I see other figures here which I feel
unqualified to even begin to interpret, and I note several recommendations,
based on various engineering factors. My volumes here are from 1997. If I
recall, Means (headquartered in Kingston, MA) has several offices around the
country, but I think they charge for consulting. In a prior life I tried to
elicit info from them, unsuccessfully, as I recall. However, huge public
libraries or an engineering library of some size might have these Means
volumes. I hope this helps.

I am out of town all next week, with no access to e-mail. If I can be of
further help to anyone on this matter, best reach me today.
