Subject: fighter pilot records

This is really a personal request, but here goes anyway:

We have a donor of photographs who was a fighter pilot in the
USAAF in WW II, in the Pacific. He's written an autobiography
about his very interesting life, with the very frustrating exception of
his time in combat. Whenever I've gently tried to ask him (knowing
full well it's none of my business, and recognizing equally full well
some people don't want to talk about such experiences) he always
says (to the point that I can quote him!) "There's no glory in taking a
human life." He's dropped intriguing hints like a story he told of a
call from a former wingman, who, upon seeing a National
Geographic article about Rabual which highlighted a scuba dive on
a sunken Japanese flying boat in the harbor, called him and said
"Didn't we shoot down a flying boat? I'll bet that is the one."

Well, I don't want to glorify him, I just want to know! So the
question is: does anyone know of a source for records of fighter
pilots in the USAAF in WW II. Planes shot down, theaters fought in,
and so on? I wouldn't share anything I learn with the donor, as I
wouldn't want him to think I was prying--even if I am!--but this gentle
man (spacing intentional) is in his mid-80s, and I would hate to think
I would never know of the sacrifices he made during the war.

Thanks for any help,
