NOTE:  If filled at the DS-9 level, this position has promotion potential
to
             the DS-11 level without further competition once all legal and
             regulatory requirements are met; however, promotion is neither


          automatic nor guaranteed.





SALARY (commensurate with experience): DS-09:  $35,310 - $45,900 per annum


                                                          DS-11:  $42,724 -
$55,541 per annum

                    TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: This is a Donated, Full-time,
                    Permanent Appointment with Benefits.

STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  The incumbent of this position is responsible for
performing the following archival functions for the archival and manuscript
collections held by the Archives.  These duties include:  appraisal of
archival and manuscript records offered for accessioning; accessioning of
archival and manuscript records; arrangement of archival and manuscript
collections; description (creation of paper and automated findings aids) of
collections; preservation, holdings maintenance and rehabilitation of
collections; reference assistance to Archives users; coordination and
oversight of microform duplication projects; and maintenance of climate
controlled archival storage environments.

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:   At the DS-9 level, applicant must
possess one (1) year specialized experience equivalent to the DS-7 level or
possess two (2) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education
or a master's or equivalent graduate degree.  At the DS-11 level, applicant
must possess one (1) year specialized experience equivalent to the DS-9
level or possess three (3) full years of progressively higher-level
graduate education or PH.D or equivalent doctoral degree.    Specialized
experience is professional experience in archival science or in a directly
related field of work, such as history that involved the collection,
appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or
archival values.  The following are illustrative of kinds of requirements:
(1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, church, business, other
archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival
nature that involved research in archival science or in directly related
courses, such as history, government, economics, political science,
international relations, or international law.

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must also meet the
following basic requirements to qualify for this position.





   (A)  Education only:  bachelor or advance degree in history, political
   science, government, or major field of study that is directly related to
   U.S. or modern European history.


OR


   (B) Combination of Education and Experience - must have successfully
   completed at least 30 semester hours that included courses such as
   history, government, political science, or other field of study directly
   related to U.S. or modern European history.  Work experience must show
   evidence of skills; abilities; and knowledge of archival principles,
   concepts, and methods; historical research methodology; and other
   subjects necessary to perform the duties of the position.



          NOTE: COLLEGE TRANSCRIPT MUST BE SUBMITTED ALONG WITH APPLICATION
          TO DEMONSTRATE COMPLETION OF THE REQUIRED COURSEWORK.

ALL QUALIFICATIONS AND TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET WITHIN 30
CALENDAR DAYS AFTER THE CLOSING DATE OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    1.             Professional knowledge of archival cataloging, including
    use of AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2(superscript: nd)
    ed.), the USMARC Format (Machine Readable Catalog), and Library of
    Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) in order to accession and catalog
    archives collections in an automated database.

    2.             Professional knowledge of archival principles, concepts,
    techniques, and standards in order to perform archival duties in
    collections management, accessioning, appraisal, arrangement, and
    preservation.

    3.             Knowledge of 20(superscript: th) century European
    history including Central Europe, European Fascism, World War II and
    the Holocaust.

    4.             Knowledge of historical research methods and tools
    regarding USHMM Archives collections and related collections in other
    relevant institutions to direct researchers to the appropriate records
    for studies.
