Re: Box labels

For approx. the past 15 years, staff at the Chicago Historical Society have
been using Perma/Seal Foil Back labels in the 1 x 3 in. size for both box
and folder labeling for manuscripts stored in "Hollinger" boxes, acid-free
folders, and other boxes. The paper conservator on staff here okayed them
for this use. They are self-adhesive.

Now they come on sheets that may be fed into a laser printer as well as on
other size strips.
We have been ordering them from University Products although other vendors
may sell them.

The ones we placed on the boxes/folders 15 years ago are still sticking.
However, you should be careful to burnish each label as soon as it is
applied to the box or folder so that it adheres firmly, especially around
the edges of the label. The adhesive on edges that are left exposed to the
air when staff hurriedly "slap" labels onto boxes or folders seems to dry
out. If you go back a few weeks or months later to try to take care of
these loose edges, it may be too late. On the other hand, the portion of
the label that did stick in the first place seems to continue to stay
secure.
