How Long to Leave EFOIA Documents on Agency Web Sites
Here is an issue that arose at a recent conference.
The Electronic Freedom of Information Act Amendments of 1996 require that
agencies post copies of frequently requested documents on their web sites,
in Electronic Reading Rooms. It also requires that any documents created
after November 1996 [?] and released under FOIA be listed on the web site.
Agencies are uncertain HOW LONG they must continue to keep such documents on
their web sites. Apparently web space within government agencies is limited
and in some cases they have or will run short of space. [I don't understand
this myself.]
It appears that at the present time, government agencies have no real sense
of how many people use their FOIA web sites, much less a feeling for which
documents get the most use or the least use.
Does anyone have any suggestions for devising a general system for
determining how long such documents should be retained on agency intranet
web sites?
