Position:  REFERENCE LIBRARIAN/CATALOGER

The American Jewish Historical Society is seeking a dynamic individual to
fill a full-time, permanent, professional position at its new headquarters
at the Center for Jewish History near Union Square.

Since 1892, the American Jewish Historical Society has served as the
national archives of the Jewish people in America.  Its holdings are the
preeminent resource for scholars, museums, filmmakers, publishers, and
genealogists who want to document the rich tapestry of American Jewish life
from the 1590s to the present.  The oldest national ethnic historical
organization in the United States, the Society was the first systematic
collector of archival, museum, and published sources depicting the
religious, communal, cultural, and political life of American Jewry, and
Jewish contributions to American life.

The qualified candidate will be responsible for maintaining the library
collections and for administering reference services.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE:
*  Reference:  Provide access for researchers in the reading room (50%, 14
hours per week), schedule reading room appointments, and respond to
research queries by email, telephone, fax, and standard mail.
*  Administration:  Work as a team with Society archivists on acquisitions,
collection development, and database development.  Represent the Society on
related Center for Jewish History committees through which policy for
public services, automation, and public programs, for example, are being
developed.
*  Cataloging:  Perform copy and original cataloging for materials in
accordance with national standards. (AARC2 and MARC)
*  Special projects:  Participate in planning of exhibits, special events
and outreach.

QUALIFICATIONS:  MLS from an ALA accredited institution.  Minimum two years
professional experience in library or archives field including reference
work.   Proficient with IBM-compatible computers using Windows NT operating
system.  Background in American Jewish history and demonstrable knowledge
of archival theory and practice desirable.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:  Mid-30s.  The Society provides its full-time
employees with a complete benefits package which includes medical and
dental plans, life insurance, employer contribution to tax sheltered
annuity, 2-3 weeks vacation, personal and sick days, and all Jewish
holidays and major US holidays off.
