Re: Remembering that OAH did help save SAA Considerable Headache

I find it utterly repulsive that Adams Mark Hotel would consider filing a
lawsuit against OAH for cancelling their reservation. Unless they signed a
contract, OAH has the right as far as I understand to cancel their
reservation. I hope the suit gets thrown out of court..

LAWSUIT MAKES OAH FUNDRAISER URGENT

August 15, 2000

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.--A lawsuit by the Adam's Mark Hotel against
the Organization of American Historians (OAH) has given greater
urgency to that group's plans to hold a fundraiser in Bloomington
later this month, according to OAH Executive Director Lee W.
Formwalt.

"We are surprised that Adam's Mark is coming after us since they
only recently settled a discrimination lawsuit by the Justice
Department for $8 million, the largest in U.S. history by a hotel
chain," said Formwalt."We plan to vigorously defend ourselves."

The hotel chain sued OAH after the group moved its annual
convention last spring from the Adam's Mark Hotel in St. Louis to
Saint Louis University. In 1999, Adam's Mark was charged by the
U.S. Justice Department and the NAACP with discriminatory
practices against African American guests and employees.

Despite strong evidence, the chain vehemently fought the lawsuits
and threatened legal action against any group cancelling a meeting
because of the hotel's record of discrimination. Faced with
increasing pressure from groups concerned about racial justice,
Adam's Mark agreed to settle last spring. Claiming to be proud of
its record concerning minorities, the chain has now sued OAH for
failing to fulfill its contract.

To help raise money for the non-profit group's defense, OAH will
hold an open house and fundraiser Friday, August 25, 2000 from
4 to 7 PM. Area residents, faculty, staff, students and anyone with
an interest in history are invited. Door prizes, a silent auction and
refreshments will be offered. All donations are tax deductible and
are gratefully accepted.

The oldest and largest association of historians dedicated to
studying the history of the United States, OAH publishes the
Journal of American History and is headquartered in the historic
155-year-old Raintree House in Bloomington.

OAH is located at 112 North Bryan Avenue, three blocks north
of the intersection of 3rd and High Streets. For more information,
contact Damon Freeman, Marketing & Advertising Manager, at
(812) 855-9854 or advertise@oah.org.
