Integrated pest management
Of course you can have a cat! Tell the people concerned that you are starting a program of integrated pest management.
Lydia, Davy, Tigger, Lady Jane Gray, and I can document the virtues of integrated pest management At our house, we had a family of cats that we acquired early in our marriage. After the last of them died, we waited several months to start our second family of the aforenamed cats. Suddenly, our attic was full of little mouse pellets. Once we had cats in the house again, there were no more mouse pellets! (Janie also took a stab at bat management once, but I managed to catch the bat before it did any her any harm).

Dreamed of having a house cat here at the historic home, but don't think
that would be looked too highly upon here. She could chase those pesky
chipmunks away, though! :)
