In conjunction with the exhibit "Archaeology of the Central Artery
Project: Highway to the Past"
Prehistoric Time Capsule: Discovering the Past in Caddy Park,
Quincy, Massachusetts
        Saturday, October 14, 2000, 10:30 am
        Presented by: Margo Muhl Davis
Summary: In July 1999, construction workers building a new playset
at Caddy Park in Quincy put their shovels in the ground and unearthed a
spectacular, 13" stone blade. The workers stopped construction and called in
Massachusetts District Commission archaeologists who, through careful
excavation, discovered an intact feature with stone tools sitting exactly
where they were placed over 2000 years ago. This talk recounts the discovery
and subsequent excavation of this feature and presents research conducted to
date on the purpose and function of this remarkable site.
Bio: Margo Muhl Davis is a graduate student in the Department of
Archaeology at Boston University, studying Archaeological Heritage
Management and New England Prehistory. She will be studying the Caddy Park
feature as part of her dissertation research. Margo also works as an editor
for the Archaeological Institute of America, the largest archaeological
organization in North America.
