digital photographs

At the Bencentennial symposium held at the Library of Congress last week, we
were told not to expect the digital image to last longer than 10 years and CDs
not more than 3 years. The image will be preserved this way only if it is
updated by every update of electronic equipment and programs. The paper copy
and microfilming still hold the lead in longevity.

Access, however, is a different topic; and, by far, the digital image can go
to more people, faster. Even so, hard copies are still recommended to be kept
to renew the image if need be. There is a possibility that the hard copy
will kept nationally, allowing all libraries to copy as needed; anyway, that
was discussed.

Think carefully before tossing,
