Smithsonian Magazine, December 2000

The December issue of Smithsonian magazine has two items of interest
to archivists and rare book curators:
The "Note from the Secretary" (p. 12) discusses the National Zoo, and
mentions "Zoos are museums exposed to the seasons, and what's most
precious in them breathes and won't hold still." That's an interesting
thought. At least my menu and rare books collections don't try to run
away, and don't need to be fed (although some of the menus do exhibit
signs of previous encounters with food....)
p. 78: "Inscribing the Word": an interesting article about the Saint
John's Bible, which is being created the old-fashioned way, by hand,
on vellum, but with some modern slants. For more information on the
