Re: Is it safe to freeze photos?
Color prints & especially negatives are supposed to be stored frozen,
at 0 - 10 degrees, to preserve the dyes as long as possible, so plain
cold is not a problem. The thing to find out is if the blast freezing
would involve much fluctuation in humididity, which could be a big
problem with photographs, dues to their layared nature, with emulsion
on a support, I assume paper in this case. Possibly a better way
would be to simply freeze the materials, rather than blast freezing
them. However, I do not think that freezing is particularly effective
on bug eggs, whether they are in books or photographs.
The National Park Service has a pamphlet about freezing for insect
control (.pdf available at this address); they say a household
freezer that will go to -20F will kill the bugs.

scroll down to section 3, agents of deterioration, it is pamphlet 3/6

Debra.

Subject: Is it safe to freeze photos?
Hi,
We have some infested b&w and color photos and I would like to know if it is
safe to blast freeze photos in the same way as we treat infested books. Any
comments and advice is welcome. Thanks in advance for your help.

Irene Wong
