Anyone who knows where the archives of the Kendall Soap Company might
be
located, please advise offlist. I have searched extensively, and even
family
members have no idea what happened to the company records. I've
checked likely local libraries and historical societies in RI and MA
without
success. I've also checked various OPACs, google, several books on
Kendall and soap-making, etc.
Kendall Soap (makers of Soapine, French Laundry Soap, etc.) was founded
in
Providence RI in 1827. The factory burned in 1844 and a new partnership
formed in 1845. In the late nineteenth century they were one of largest
soap makers, and famous for their colorful and extensive advertising
which featured their famous whale. They stayed in Providence at least
until the turn of the century, perhaps into the 1920s, and were still in
business in the mid 1930s, in Lawrence MA. They may have been bought out
by anothercompany.
Thanks,
Kevin
