Re: ethical question

What I have done in situations where income is involved (payment
from a magazine, etc.) is to do this on my own time, usually taking
annual leave during the day and recording the paperwork for this.

By collective bargaining contract, our faculty (my rank is university
librarian/professor) may perform work that leads to income. If they
feel it offers the potential of conflict of interest, they have to file a
form identifying the work and income, and any use of university
resources they might utilize (telephone, copier, etc.). These are
99% approved as such professional activities usually do benefit
the university (reputation, research/teaching, etc.).

I don't want to create the feeling in the department--since we are
public service and taxpayer supported--that we are only doing work
for outside income. I also don't want to have to explain how this
outside income only comes to me, or create a situation where I
have to channel the income into an appropriate account.

One of the first outside income checks we ever got was where
we had done research work for an agency and unknown to us
they had put a line in their budget for some small amount and
then sent us a check. There was, here, only a general Foundation
account for the Library, with signatory control only under the
Director. To be frank, once that check reached the administration,
I never saw that check or those funds again. What I'm saying is
if you do generate income for your agency, try to be sure that the
income comes back to benefit your department. Fortunately,
today, we do have our own Foundation account for putting in funds
that are received.
