Rolled maps, etc., revisited
Hi, gang,
No doubt I'm late to join in on this thread, but when I last read up
on paper conservation several years ago, the recommendation was that
maps, drawings, posters, blueprints, and other large two-dimensional
works were best stored flat (of course we *all* have the copious
space and budget for flat storage cabinets!).
The theory was that paper fibers would permanently curl and possibly
break during future attempts to unroll the document. In other words,
roll up a document long enough and you can't safely unroll it. I've
certainly had this experience with posters I rolled up years ago at
home, and I've seen graduate students at the Art Conservation Dept.
here at Buffalo State College labor long and hard to gently
rehumidify a rolled document in order to relax the fibers.
Comments?
Best,
-C.
