The Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace is a public policy research center devoted to the advanced study of domestic and international affairs, founded at Stanford University in 1919 by Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States. The Institution's Library and Archives, with more than 1.6 million volumes and more than fifty million documents, constitute one of the world's largest repositories of materials on twentieth-century social, economic, and political change.

The Assistant/Associate Archivist will participate in a wide variety of activities, including maintaining collections and supervising the creation and dissemination of finding aids. Under the direction of the Associate Archivist, the successful applicant will be responsible for the following:


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Supervise and perform processing activities according to archival standards and practices and following in-house guidelines. Create, edit, and modify finding aids to collections and contribute to the Online Archive of California.

* Hire, train, and supervise several Archival Specialists and several students engaged in processing activities and support work. Assign tasks and ensure efficient and productive workflow.

* Participate in setting priorities and establishing policies.

* Work closely with the Preservation Officer and Audio-Visual Specialist in devising and implementing housing and duplication policies for audio-visual materials and paper-based items requiring conservation treatment.

* Work closely with the Preservation Officer and Microfilming Unit to develop microfilming plan and ensure smooth workflow.

* Perform related projects and special assignments as requested, including the preparation of budgets and progress reports.

* Successful applicant may be asked to apply for U.S. national security clearance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Intimate knowledge of 20th century European history, with graduate degree in history or related field preferred. ALA-accredited MLS degree or ACA certification as professional archivist, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in an archival repository. Several years experience and proven ability in supervising a large and diverse staff. In-depth knowledge of archival arrangement and description practices, and vast experience creating finding aids. Knowledge of computer applications in archives, especially word processing systems; on-line catalogs and databases such as RLIN; and Web based programs. Ability to work independently and as a team member, and to work effectively and collegially across units and departments. Exercise good judgment and initiative, and manage sensitive material in a confidential manner. Excellent command of English and working knowledge of a range of Western/Eastern European languages. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, analytical and organizational skills, attention to detail, problem-solving and interpersonal skills. Ability to lift 25-pound boxes and push heavily-loaded book trucks. Experience in EAD/DTD encoding of finding aids, Web page design, digitization of materials and electronic access strongly preferred.
