Head of Special Collections Processing and Digital Access

The University of Chicago Library seeks an experienced and creative
librarian to provide leadership in processing and digital access for
Special Collections materials in all formats. Special Collections is
actively involved in the Library's retrospective digitization program and
works within the Library's collaborative structure for digital library
development.  This is a new position that works collaboratively with
Special Collections staff and Library colleagues to develop metadata,
search, and display structures for retrospective digitization projects.
Coordinates physical arrangement and description, processing, cataloging,
and metadata activities for the University archives, manuscripts, and rare
book collections in Special Collections.  Directly supervises a staff of 4,
including 3 librarians; supervises additional project staff as appropriate.
This position reports to the Curator of Special Collections.

QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate degree in library science, three years' experience
with special collections processing and/or cataloging; supervisory
experience; familiarity with current and emerging models for providing
access to materials in a variety of digital and physical formats;
familiarity with existing metadata standards; demonstrated commitment to
public services and broad familiarity with use of primary sources in
research and teaching; working knowledge of at least one Western European
language, preferably German or Latin; library automation experience and
strong computer skills; collaborative approach to responsibilities,
initiative, creative and effective problem-solving and decision-making
skills, judgment and discretion, excellent communication skills; ability to
work effectively and collegially across units and departments; project
management and grant-writing experience preferred.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Appointment salary based on qualifications and
experience.  Benefits include retirement plan, health and life insurance,
and paid time off.  There is tuition plan for college age and younger children.
