Duties:  The incumbent of this position serves as the senior historian for assigned directorates within the Air Force Research Laboratories.  Assignments involve very broad, major historical assignments and topic or themes that are of substantial complexity and require extensive consideration and depth of treatment of numerous sub-topics to develop and publish comprehensive treatises, papers, and other publications.  Assignments frequently cross organizational, functional, and technology boundaries; and require critical judgment in extensively planning and accomplishing studies and analyses to discern and validate facts, premises, and establish historical conclusions and import.
Extensively plans and uses professional research methods to study topics for information and to obtain pertinent data from documentary sources.  Researches information from numerous sources that include obscure, questionable, and/or remote references that may even extend to foreign sources and references.  Consults and interviews key individuals from government, academia, and/or industry for information and perspectives.  Determines accuracy, authenticity, and relevance and value of sources and gathered information  Writes historical narratives to produce professional histories of Air Force Research Laboratories.  Complies comprehensive working notes and secures key documentation to support historical studies and projects.  Makes decisions regarding the use and treatment of data.  Prepares and writes a coherent narrative presentation of the historical research data.  Responds independently to requests from Air Force Research Laboratory management and higher headquarters or o!
utside sources for historical information and data regarding Air Research Laboratories and related topics.  Makes verbal presentations of information as required.  Attends conferences and meetings relating to the profession.

Basic Qualification Requirements:  Successful completion of a four-year degree from an
accredited college or university in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester (27 quarter) hours in history.

OR
        A combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester (27 quarter) hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
        Evaluation of Graduate Education: Graduate study in the social sciences or humanities may also be credited when such study included training in historical research methodology; or the thesis approached the subject from an historical viewpoint and used professional historical research methodology and techniques in its preparation.
        Additional Requirements:
        One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11 in the federal service.  Specialized experience is that which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the position being filled.
