It does appear that compact shelving will increase your
storage capacity by 50% or more.  In our case, with
ten ranges and nine aisles, after switching to compact
shelving, the shelving will give us roughly 18 aisles...
That, of course, is greater than 50% increase in
capacity.

From your question, however, compact shelving does
not take half of the floor space.   There still have to be
room for the ranges to move....I have seen some instituions
where the grooves are carpeted, but there are signs to avoid
walking in these areas for fear of getting tiny heels caught
in the shelving tracks (uh for the record I don't wear heels!)
