ART January Meeting
JANUARY 2002 MEETING NOTICE
The New York Mercantile Library of New York
An Educational Institution Promoting Literature in America
The Mercantile Library of New York was founded in 1820 by merchants and
their clerks before the advent of public libraries. Originally known as
the Mercantile Library Association, its circulating library first opened in
1821 in rented rooms on Fulton Street. By 1870, the library?s collection
of 120,000 volumes was the leading circulating library in the United States
with an extraordinary collection of books in the humanities. The Library
was also known for its popular lecture program that featured such venerable
speakers as William Makepeace Thackeray, Frederick Douglass, and Mark
Twain. At that time, the reading room had more than four hundred
newspapers and periodicals, three thousand reference works and was
reportedly used by a thousand persons a day. The Library also offered
classes on many subjects and was considered a meeting place for social and
educational pursuits.
More recently, the Library has focused on developing its collection of
fiction and related non-fiction, the establishment of the Center for World
Literature, and the creation of the Literary Center. The Mercantile Library
is also home to a writer?s studio, and the Proust Society of America.
Harold Augenbraum, the Director of The New York Mercantile Library, will
speak about the history of the Mercantile Library, its place in the New
York literary world, its programs of literary interest, and its current
mission to individuals and literary organizations.
