Re: Article in Chronicle of Higher Ed
No question, Chris, an article like this should raise certain flags for
anyone in a supervisory position. Am I treating my staff with respect? Are
they treated as part of the team or not? Should they be? Are they bringing
a fresh perspective to something I've been doing the same way for umpteen
years?
Those questions are valid, but I still feel (and I hope my letter to the CHE
reflected this) that the article will leave readers with a false impression
of the archival world. There may be no reason to write to the paper calling
Ms. Young a dope, lazy, shiftless, and an al-Qaeda member, but that doesn't
mean some of her impressions can't be countered in a reasonable way, in
print.
If part of your point was that we in this forum have no business casting
aspersions on the author without being in her shoes, amen, brother. On the
other hand, it doesn't mean we can't offer another perspective to the
general public, which the academics reading CHE are in this case.
(Soapbox stored until the next rant hits)
