Proffered Academic Regalia--Compiled Answers
3-28-2002
List,
Many thanks for the prompt, plentiful and pithy answers to my request for
suggested alternatives regarding the offer of academic regalia. Alas,
clothing fits our existing collections no better than brachiopods, nor do
our alumni and commencement people pant after such an acquisition. So, I
will probably follow the advice that heads the list below.
Jan Boles, Archivist
The Robert E. Smylie Archives

My advice: Say thank you very much for the wonderful offer of her
father's academic regalia and how much you appreciate the generous offer
but that academic regalia is out of the collecting scope of the archives.

Perhaps the person responsible for commencement would like to have it and
could arrange to use it over the years for faculty who are marching in
commencement but do not have a gown.

The office here that oversees Commencement and other such ceremonial events
requiring academic dress sometimes accepts these garments for the use of
participants who do not have their own. You might try whomever that is at
Albertson College, assuming the would-be donor would not be offended at the
idea of someone else using her father's robes.

At ..... the President's Office keeps a supply of academic regalia
that faculty or visiting marchers can use. When we are offered academic
regalia we explain that we normally do not collect clothing, but if the
regalia is in good shape [we are] happy to add it to this
supply of loaners.

You don't have a University Archives? Maybe it's a good time to begin an
exhibit of academic clothing -- from the 50's (for instance) to the
present??? Museum-type exhibits always go over well.
