baseball video copyright question
Here is an interesting copyright question for you all. Back in 1993 when
Major League Baseball awarded a franchise to Denver, the Colorado Rockies
held an open invitation tryout at the University of Denver baseball fields.
In my capacity as University Archivist ( it is a tough job but SOMEONE has to
do it ) I went to the site and videotaped the goings on. There was no security
to speak of, and there were many media outlets as well as the general public
recording the event. We are now looking at cataloging my very unprofessional
home video of potential big leaguers running, stretching, playing catch,
taking batting practice, etc.
What are the copyright issues here? Any potential pitfalls in cataloging
the video into our collection? Should I talk to the Rockies. or is that
just asking for problems I do not need?
(P.S. - as I understand it not one of the several hundred participants
ever actually made the team, so my guess is that there are no issues of
stealing some star player's image. )
