I've enjoyed reading many of Ambrose's books. One could say reading a
Stephen Ambrose book is just like reading an anthology, but without
all those bothersome attributions :-)

Seriously, few people have done more to popularize the history of 20th
century U.S. than Ambrose, which is a compliment if one accepts that
popularizing history is a benefit to humankind (academics don't always
agree on that). He has always seemed to have a genuine interest in
those who participated in World War II and his books bring forth the
human element better than many works on the same subject. Despite his
recent notoriety, I think he will be remembered for this.

He's also a former professor of history here at Johns Hopkins, before
he moved on to locations that could better massage his ego. I just
wish he weren't such a tireless self-promoter, along with promoting
interest in history.
