In like Flynn
Finally it appears that all the boxes have made their way into the new house. Friends who come to visit remark that it’s not so much a home these days as it is a skinner maze, with Chinese food and a great big deck sitting in for the cheese reward.
Today I worked at dissembling the maze in the living room, while K. attacked the kitchen cabinetry. It’s not defeated by any means, but we’ve managed a bit of shrinkage. The only thing that gives us pause is that the pile in the spare room seems to be growing as the main rooms become clearer. A trip to the attic will be warrented soon. It might be creepy, but it’s got nothing on the crawl space under the house. Ugh.
HBO
I switched over to digital cable this time out, throwing caution and cash to the wind. For the first time in my entire life, I now live in a home with premium cable. I’ve had regular cable for many years; it was one of the first frivilous expenses I allowed when I got out on my own. My mom had an argument with the local cable company sometime in 1977, and since then had refused to subscribe to any cable service. It was the era of MTV and my
family got all of seven channels.
I survived high school without knowing anything of The Real World and only gleaning the most basic Beavis and Butthead references. The
movies I wasn’t old enough to see in the theater I might get to watch over at a friend’s house, but I certainly couldn’t sneak them while Mom and Dad were out. The raciest thing I could find was probably Masterpiece Theatre No wonder I read books instead.
Growing up in a low-TV household, basic cable seemed sprawling with its 80-some channels. I rarely found absolutely nothing to watch, and it wasn’t only because my standards are low. Now, with hundreds of channels, I find it difficult to pick just one. (Luckily, we’re a three-DVR household. Have sitcom, will travel.)
And this has been made ever-more difficult by the addition of HBO. Where else can one find ‘My Life as a Pimp’ and a Bill Maher show where every other word out of his mouth is vulgar. I find it funny but not terribly surprising how much that man likes to say the word ‘cock.’
Cat Hazards
So my cat knocked a glass of water on and into my favorite IBM clicky keyboard. Currently, it’s drying out in the hopes it will return to a place where the ctrl, shift and caps lock keys function. Otherwise, we will be having funeral services as that was the Best Keyboard Ever. Sigh.
